Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs LA Galaxy II
April 10, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Sacramento Republic FC kickoff their home campaign when they take on LA Galaxy II on Saturday, April 11 at Bonney Field Opening Night. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. The match is sold out.
This is the second meeting between Republic FC and Los Dos in the 2015 season. On Saturday, March 28, Republic FC defeated LA 3-2 on a late goal by second-half substitute Rodrigo Lopez. Octavio Guzman added two penalty goals in the match, his first multi-goal match of his career. The match is the second straight victory for Republic FC over Los Dos. Republic FC's all-time regular season record against Galaxy II is 3-1-1.
Republic FC enters the match after falling to Portland Timbers 2, 2-1, on Thursday, April 2. Former Republic FC loan player Steven Evans scored the match-winning goal in the 87th minute on a strike from the top of the box. Republic FC rookie forward Cameron Iwasa scored the lone goal for Republic FC, his first as a professional.
Iwasa's goal against T2 was not just his first professional goal but was also the first professional assist for Joaquin Rivas, a fellow rookie forward. Rivas entered the match as a substitute just a minute before delivering the ball to Iwasa for the goal. Rivas and Iwasa have appeared in all three of Republic FC's 2015 USL matches.
Lopez scored his first goal of the 2015 season against Los Dos in their last meeting. He has now scored five goals against LA Galaxy II in all competitions and four in the last two matches, including his hat trick in the 2014 USL Semifinal match. His five goals against Los Dos are his most against any one USL team and the most of any Republic FC player against Galaxy II.
LA Galaxy II come into the match looking for their first win of the season. Los Dos has played in three close contests to start the season, with both losses coming in one-goal matches and the third being a scoreless draw.
LA Galaxy first team midfielder Raul Mendiola leads Los Dos in his second year on loan with Galaxy II. Last season, Mendiola led the club with seven assists while adding two goals. This season, Mendiola has started strong assisting two of Los Dos' three 2015 goals. His two assists are tops on the club.
Defender Daniel Steres scored one of the two Los Dos goals against Republic FC on March 28. Steres scored three goals last season while leading the Galaxy II defense. In 2013, Steres and Republic FC defender Mickey Daly were teammates with the Wilmington Hammerheads FC before both left in 2014.
Bonney Field Opening Night will mark the opening of the newly expanded Bonney Field and the first home match for Republic FC in the 2015 USL season. Gates open at 6 p.m. Live music will be performed by Musical Charis pre match, post match and at halftime.
The match will be broadcast live on CW31 and KHTK Sports 1140 AM. Coverage on CW 31 begins at 7 p.m. The match will also be live streamed at SacRepublicFC.com/matchday and updates will be provided via Twitter @SacRepublicFC or using #SACvLA.
