MASL Major Arena Soccer League

MASL Weekly - Week 9

December 24, 2014 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News Release

Lancers and Mustangs Pull Off Dramatic Rallies

12/24/14 - The Rochester Lancers overcame a three-goal deficit and rallied twice to beat the Syracuse Silver Knights, and the Chicago Mustangs came back multiple times from a four-goal gaps to defeat the Detroit Waza Flo in a week of photo finishes.

Rochester tied the game only to see Syracuse go ahead once more. Andrew Hoxie tied the game again with less than two minutes to go. The teams played a scoreless overtime and Rochester won the shootout tiebreaker to improve to 4-1.

Chicago scored three straight goals to cut into a 4-0 deficit in Detroit only to fall behind by four again at 7-3. The Mustangs kept chipping away, but seemed to be finished off when Miki Djerisilo gave Detroit a 9-7 lead with an empty net goal with 3:52 remaining. Chicago answered right back, though, 37 seconds later to cut it to 9-8 and Wilo Martinez tied the game with 1:01 left. Instead of going to overtime Omar Santillan hit a laser with 37 seconds left in the game to give Chicago a 10-9 road victory.

In a game where they never trailed, the Oxford City FC of Texas had to hold off a persistent Wichita B-52s team to escape Wichita with an 8-7 win. Clinging to a one goal lead Texas was saddled with two blue cards in the last three minutes of the game giving Wichita an extended 5 v 3 power play. The Oxford City defense led by Carlos "Chile" Farias and rookie goalkeeper Kyle Renfro held Wichita at bay to net their sixth win in their last seven games.

MASL Team of the Week

GK - Zeke Sanchez, Las Vegas Legends - The third year Legends goalkeeper picked up two tough wins in Mexico helping to lift Las Vegas back to .500. The Argentina native pulled Las Vegas into a tie with the Turlock Express for the third playoff spot in the Pacific Division.

D - Tony Walls, Milwaukee Wave - Walls, back for his second season with the Wave, is solidifying his role with the team. The 24-year old local product made the MISL's All-Rookie Team last year. In the MASL Game of the Week on ESPN 3 Walls had two goals and an assist in the Wave's 9-3 win over the Tulsa Revolution.

D - Luis Piffer, Ontario Fury - Piffer is becoming one of the MASL's most reliable two-way players as he adjusts to the arena game. He had three assists in the Fury's fifth straight win on December 18 and has 10 points in his last three games.

F - Lucas Totti, Oxford City FC of Texas - Gordy Gurson and Totti are the MASL's rookie sensations. Gurson leads the league in scoring, but Totti is climbing the charts. His three goals and an assist in a road win at Wichita propelled him into third place in the league's points race. It was his fifth four-point game of the season.

F - Freddy Moojen, Dallas Sidekicks - The former Wichita Wings and Baltimore Blast forward scored five goals for Dallas in their 11-3 win over the Brownsville Barracudas on Saturday.
