The Marshals News Release
Cincinnati, OH - The Cincinnati Marshals kicked off their season against a River City Rage team looking for some redemption.
The Marshals had eliminated the Rage from the playoffs last season in their first ever game at the Savvis Center. The Rage, however, turned the tables on the Marshals in their first official game at their new home 76-34.
The Rage scored on their first possession of the night, but the Marshals came right back with Michael Larkin hauling in a 13-yard pass from Deontey Kenner to cut the deficit to 7-6. River City pushed the lead to 20-6 mid-way through the second quarter before the Marshals cut the lead to seven at the half when Ray Jackson bulled in from the 2 with 7:45 left in the half.
Kenner completed his first four passes of the season, shaking off some of the rust from an extended layoff as the Marshals out gained the Rage in the first half 104 to 63.
The Marshals countered the Rage's score to open the second half when Kenner hit Troy Albea for a 19-yard scoring strike. River City scored on their next two possessions to push the lead to 41-27 before the Marshals put together a drive at the end of the third quarter.
Jackson opened the drive with a 13-yard pickup by Jackson before Kenner hit Jackson for a five yard gain. River City was flagged for pass interference to move the ball to the River City 5. Troy Albea moved the ball to the two on second down, but the Marshals could not push the ball into the end zone as time expired on the third quarter.
The Rage put 35 points on the board in the fourth quarter with the Marshals managing a 5-yard scoring strike from Kenner to George Murray for their final score of the night.
On the night, Kenner finished with 104 yards through the air of 13 of 26 passing with three scores and three picks. Ray Jackson was leading ground gainer on the night with 76 yards on 14 carries. Murray was the leading receiver with six catches for 39 yards and a score.
Billy Back led the special teams with six catches for 140 yards while D.J. Sutton led the Marshals with 6.5 tackles and one interception.
The Marshals return to action April 1 when they host the Dayton Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. at U.S. Bank Arena.
