Morehead City Marlins News Release
Petersburg, V.A. - The Morehead City Marlins (16-18, 4-2) and Petersburg Generals (6-25, 2-5) had their fair share of trouble scoring runs on Tuesday night. However, the Marlins, backed by strong pitching from Justin Taylor and Calvin Rayburn managed to split a doubleheader in Petersburg, VA with a 1-0 extra-inning victory in game two and a tough 2-1 loss in game one.
Dylan Brown made the difference with an RBI double to left-centerfield, which scored Cole Billingsley who doubled down the left field line in the previous at bat. That would be the only run the Marlins would need as Rayburn dominated the Generals on his 21st birthday. Hayden Jones made a terrific diving stop for the second out of the bottom of the eighth to get the tying run at the plate. The tall, right-hander tossed a complete game shutout (8 innings), allowing just two hits, while striking out seven and walking just two batters. Rocco Cundari was solid in a losing effort for the Generals. He allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out seven and walked two.
The Marlins dropped game one of the doubleheader by a score of 2-1. Morehead City trailed the Generals 2-0 for the majority of the game, before picking up a run on when Ryan Muno scored on a ground ball off the bat of Marlin catcher Zach Arnold. However, the Marlins failed to tie the game as the Generals hung on for the win. Tim Koons picked up the win with six innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out seven and walked just one. Miles McQuaig picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless seventh frame.
Morehead City heads out to Wilmington on Wednesday, before returning home on Thursday night to face the Asheboro Copperheads at Big Rock Stadium at 7:05 PM. The starting pitchers are to be announced.
