Marlins Sign Pair from Dartmouth

Morehead City, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins have signed Michael Danielak and Nick Lombardi for the 2014 season. Both players attend Ivy League institution Dartmouth College. Danielak is a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Mt. Prospect, Illinois. Lombardi hails from Saugus, California and is a junior third baseman.

Danielak went 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA in 11 relief appearances during Dartmouth's 2013 season. He struck out 18 batters in 18 and 1/3 innings pitched while walking four batters. Opponents had a batting average of .221 against the 6'4 hurler. He had an incredible 2013 summer season with the Licking County Settlers of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. He finished with a 5-0 record in seven starts on the mound, with a 0.88 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 41 innings. Danielak was ranked as the sixth best professional prospect in the Great Lakes League by Perfect Game. He is eyeing a career in investment banking following his playing days.

Lombardi has been a mainstay in the Big Green's lineup during his career. Through two seasons he has started 76 games. In 2013, he hit .294 with 12 doubles, four home runs and 39 RBIs. He only committed five errors for the season while playing the hot corner. Lombardi hit .243 with two home runs and 25 RBIs as a freshman. His academic interests include architecture and engineering.

The Marlins open the 2014 season on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs on May 27th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
