Mariners fight back for 1-1 draw with Toronto

August 28, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release


Toronto - Playing in their second match in less than 48 hours, the Virginia Beach Mariners fought back and left Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto with a 1-1 draw tonight.

The Mariners went down 1-0 in the 43d minute on a goal by Toronto forward Abraham Francois and had been outshot 5-2 at the half. But the team turned on the heat in the last 10 minutes of the match scoring in the 83rd minute. Forward Darren Caskey sent a long pass into the box that found forward Jakob Fenger. He was able to control the ball in the air and head it past Toronto keeper Theo Zagar for the tie. Defender Ptah Myers forced Zagar to make a spectacular fingertip save in the 90th minute with a shot from 6 yards out. The Mariners outshot Toronto 8-4 in the second half.

The Mariners return home to the Sportsplex Friday night, September 2 and Sunday night September 4 for home matches against Portland and Charleston. Both games kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday night will feature an Alumni Game at 5 p.m. Gates open at 4:30 p.m.
