Vancouver Whitecaps News Release
The Whitecaps continued their undefeated home game streak tonight with a 2-0 win over the visiting Puerto Rico Islanders in front of a standing room only crowd of 5,817. Both of the Whitecaps goals came in the second half, courtesy of Jason Jordan. Jordan is the USL's leading goal scorer with 17 goals on the season.
The Whitecaps swept the season series against Puerto Rico, with the Whitecaps winning the first match back on June 22 in Puerto Rico 2-1. This was Puerto Rico's first time ever playing at Swangard.
Rookie goalkeeper Josh Wicks earned his fourth shutout in seven matches, recording six saves on 12 shots.
The Whitecaps record improves to 11-4-9 for 42 points, as Vancouver maintains their third place standing, three points behind Rochester with one game in hand. Puerto Rico remains in seventh place, tied with Portland and Charleston, as their record drops to 7-10-8.
Vancouver's next game is Wednesday, August 31 at 4:30pm PT in Montreal against the Impact. Wednesday's match will be the first of a three game road trip. Their next home game is on September 11 at 4:00pm versus the same Montreal Impact in the final regular season game.
Scoring Summary: 55' Vanc Jason Jordan (Steve Klein) Klein crossed the ball over to Jordan, who kicked the ball in, keeping it low to the ground.
71' Vanc Jason Jordan (Steve Kindel) Kindel made a great run down the left flank prior to feeding a wide open Jordan. Jordan coolly controlled the ball in front of the Islander's goalkeeper before kicking another low ball into the right corner. It was Jordan's 17th goal of the season.
Game Notes: Valente was off to a great start with two shots on goal within the first three minutes. The first scoring chance was within the first minute of play when he was nicely set up by Morris. Valente's second chance came on a breakaway which he fired over the net.
Puerto Rico's first opportunity happened at the eighth minute, with a kick by Chilean international Sebastian Rozental that just went over the crossbar.
Fuller had a great chance with a header that went off the post at 17', and four minutes later Klein fed it to Valente, who took another great shot that was saved by Kennedy.
At 19', Petter Villegas made a shot that had Wicks diving to the right to push the ball away for a great save.
Another solid chance for Vancouver came at 35' when Nash's corner kick found Morris' head before landing in front of Jordan. Jordan's quick shot in traffic was deflected wide.
At 46', Nash took a straight shot from 25 yards out, but was robbed by Kennedy.
Jason Jordan is running away with the league scoring lead, as his 17 goals and three assists, for 37 points, puts him twelve points up on Atlanta's Fabian Dawkins.
Vancouver remains unbeaten at home, at 9-0-4, the best home record in the league.
