Mariners, Battery draw 0-0

August 7, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Charleston, SC - Playing in their second match in less than 24 hours, the Virginia Beach Mariners left Blackbaud Stadium on Sunday with one point and a 0-0 tie. It was goalkeeper Matt Nelson's fifth shutout and his second in two nights. The draw pulled the Mariners into a tie for 10th place in the standings, just five points out of the sixth and final playoff spot with six games remaining.

In what seemed an instant replay from the match Saturday night against Vancouver, the Mariners were awarded a penalty kick in the 23rd minute when Charleston defender Ben Hollingsworth was called for a handball in the penalty box. And as in the match on Saturday, Mariner forward Hamisi Amani-Dove stepped up to take the shot but this time instead of the ball sailing in, Battery keeper Chris Doyle smothered the shot. Forward John Barry Nusum had an excellent chance in the 68th minute but again Doyle came up with the save. The Mariners outshot the Battery 13-8.

The Mariners' back line robbed Charleston in the 51st minute after not clearing a Battery corner kick. Hollingsworth controlled the loose ball but his shot was cleared off the line by the Virginia Beach defense.

The Mariners return to the field on Wednesday, August 17 for an international friendly against Jamaican Premier League team Tivoli Gardens at 7:30 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Tivoli Gardens were the runner-up in their League in 2005 after winning the championship in 2004. Tickets for the match are $8 for ages 11 and up. 2005 season ticket holders and children 10 and under are free.
