Mariners announce "Spring Break" international friendly

April 3, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release


Virginia Beach, VA - The Virginia Beach Mariners are pleased to announce an International Friendly Match for April 12th at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex against Jamaican Premier League team Village United. The game is scheduled to kick off at 6:30PM and will be one of the Mariners final tests prior to their league home opener against the Toronto Lynx on April 22nd at 7.30PM.

Village United is currently in 4th place in the Wray & Nephew Jamaican Premier League with three games remaining. Village were promoted in 2000 after winning the National A League and have been in the Wray & Nephew Jamaican Premier League ever since.

Village United has several Jamaican internationals within its ranks including Newton Sterling and last seasons Mariners' player, Teofore Bennett plus the Charleston Battery's newest signing Shane Crawford. United also has several former Jamaican internationals including Nicardo Folkes, Athol Franklyn and Kirk Hendricks and one Liberian international, Edmund Kingston.

On their USA tour Village United plays the Atlanta Silverbacks on April 10, the Virginia Beach Mariners April 12, the Charleston Battery on April 15 and finishes with a game versus the Harrisburg City Islanders on April 17.

It will be a good test for the Mariners squad as a final preparation for the long season ahead as Village United will come fit and at the end of their season. This game represents a true competitive test of the Mariners level of readiness as the season approaches and a great chance for our fans to have a taste of International Competition before the season even begins.

Come see your 2006 Mariners in one of their final games prior to the Season Opening Game on April 22nd at the Sportsplex.
