Mariners add Hokie

March 8, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Virginia Beach, VA- The Mariners are pleased to announce that Goalkeeper Chase Harrison will join the 2006 Mariners' squad. The Huntington, West Virginia native is 6'3" and 178lbs. He majored in Consumer Studies while attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Tech).

Harrison was an integral part of the Tech program and holds all school goalkeeping records except one. These records include career minutes played (7,181), career goals against average (1.12), shutouts (24), season minutes played (2062), season goals against average (0.94), and season shutouts (8), the last of which he earned twice.

Real Salt Lake (RSL) chose Harrison as the third round selection in the 2006 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft. RSL released the goalkeeper and the Mariners signed him for the 2006 season on March 1, as the Virginia Beach squad extended a more regular playing opportunity to him. It is expected that Harrison will add some real quality to the Mariners' goalkeeping squad. RSL Coaching Staff and Mariners' Coach Jay Hoffman will maintain communication over the season on the player's progress and his situation will be discussed again after the 2006 season.

"Chase comes to the Mariners extremely well respected by the RSL coaching staff and we are very pleased he will join us for the 2006 season. Between Matt Nelson and Chase we have two keepers with the ability to play in the USL - 1 and this takes care of a very important part of the squad for the new season," said Mike McCann, Managing Director. "We still have a few key positions to fill in the squad over the next two weeks but the security of having a strong keeper staff is something we are extremely pleased to have resolved."

The Mariners begin their season April 22 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
