August 21, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
(Southaven, MS) -- Long time RiverKings' fans will remember the name Steve Margeson, and they'll hear it again with the "good guys" this season. RiverKings' Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski has signed the big defenseman to the roster for the upcoming CHL campaign, which begins October 17th at home against the Wichita Thunder.
Steve played four seasons for the Memphis RiverKings, beginning in the 2002-03 year when he was obtained in a trade from the New Mexico Scorpions. The Banff, Alberta, Canada native played the entire 2006-07 season under Kaminski with the Youngstown SteelHounds and started last season with the âHounds, before being called up to the American Hockey League with the Lake Erie Monsters.
The CHL career totals for the six-foot-two, 210 pound blue liner feature 23 goals and 73 points in 223 career games with New Mexico, Memphis, and Youngstown. His best CHL season came with Youngstown, where he scored 17 goals, had 39 points, and was a plus-21. Three goals were power play goals and one was a game-winner.
In CHL playoff games, Steve scored three goals and had five points in 13 post-season games (six with Youngstown and seven with Memphis). All three post-season goals scored were power play goals with Youngstown and one was a game-winner.
At the AHL level with Lake Erie, Margeson chipped in with one assist and had eight penalty minutes in 19 appearances. Margeson also played two games in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch in the 2006-07 season.
With the Memphis RiverKings, Margeson played in 133 games, scoring six goals and adding 18 assists for 24 points. Steve was penalized for a total of 167 penalty minutes in his four seasons with Memphis, but also scored two power play goals.
Margeson's pro career also includes one season in the Southern Professional Hockey League with the Fayetteville Antz and he played junior hockey in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Merritt Centennials.
Kaminski says he's glad to have Margeson on his roster again. "He's a very âdedicated and determined' person and his work ethic is awesome," Kaminski said. "He brings size, great speed, and his confidence has flourished to get him to the next level."
Margeson says he's looking forward to returning to the Mid-South and playing for Kaminski. "I'm really excited about it. I think I'm willing to jump into the play as an offensive style defenseman. I'm pretty physical, like to be an agitator, but will also use my skating and speed."
