Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce the signing of goaltender Marek Schlenker to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.
Schlenker, 17, is currently playing with South Alberta Hockey Academy (SAHA) U18 Prep of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) and owns an 8-2-1-0 regular-season record. He ranks third in the league with a .930 save percentage and fifth with a 2.33 goals-against average. The Okotoks, Alta. native recently competed in the prestigious Circle K Classic before the New Year with SAHA and backstopped an impressive .921 save percentage. The 6-foot, 165-pound goaltender was twice recognized as SAHA's Player of the Game, claiming the honors on December 29 and 30, and led his team to the tournament's quarterfinals.
"After playing well at the Winterhawks Neely Cup Training Camp, Marek has made the most of the quality coaching at SAHA to develop his game. He has earned recent recognition as a top tier goalie at CSSHL U18 Showcase in December, and his play at the Circle K in Calgary," Winterhawks' Assistant to the General Manager and Director of Scouting Mike Coflin said. "The first half of his season has been steady and he's allowed his game to mature. Our staff is excited to sign Marek and welcome him to the Portland Winterhawks family."
Prior to the 2023-24 campaign, Schlenker developed with the Okotoks Oilers organization of the Alberta Elite Hockey League and was selected by the Winterhawks in the eighth round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft. He participated in the Winterhawks last two training camps and even won the 2022 Neely Cup as a member of Team Rattie.
Schlenker will join the Winterhawks ahead of Friday night's home game against Everett and will wear #35.
