Bradenton Marauders News Release

Bradenton, Fla. - The Bradenton Marauders, the Advanced-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, are proud to announce the promotion of several players to the Altoona Curve, the Pirates' Double-A affiliate. Gerrit Cole, the first-overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft, is scheduled to be promoted on Wednesday, June 20, and will start that night against New Britain. Evan Chambers, Drew Maggi and Stefan Welch were promoted Thursday, while Hunter Strickland was added to the Curve roster today.

Cole departs as the Marauders leader in wins, strikeouts, and opponents' batting average. The righty posted a 5-1 record in 13 starts, pitching 67 innings and striking out 69 while walking 21 batters. The former UCLA Bruin held opposing batters to a paltry .217 batting average. The 22-year-old is in his first professional season and was selected to the All-Star team for the Florida State League's South Division. In his final start for Bradenton, Cole pitched five shutout innings while striking out seven Fort Myers batters to earn his fifth win.

Chambers departs as the third-longest tenured Marauder, trailing only Robbie Grossman and Calvin Anderson in number of games played. Chambers played in 279 games as a Marauder. His 140 hits for Bradenton are fourth in the team's all-time list. The 23-year-old outfielder was batting .202 with one homer and 19 RBIs at the time of his promotion.

Maggi ranked fifth in the FSL in stolen bases with 17 at the time of his promotion. In 54 games, the 23-year-old infielder hit .241 with one homer and 28 RBIs. On April 30, Maggi tied a Marauders record by scoring five runs in an 8-0 win over the Jupiter Hammerheads.

Welch led the Marauders in home runs with eight during his time in Bradenton. The 23-year-old infielder was second on the team with 37 RBIs and had a .265 batting average. From April 28 through May 16, Welch had a 16-game hitting streak, the second-longest hitting streak ever recorded by a Bradenton batter. Welch was named to his second-FSL All-Star team shortly before receiving his promotion to Altoona.

Strickland pitched in 10 games for the Marauders this season, including nine starts. The 23-year-old righty went 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA. He struck out 25 batters and walked eight for the Marauders after missing the entire 2011 season due to injury.
