Marauders Drop Late Lead in 5-4 Setback

CLEARWATER, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, made another late comeback Monday night, only to watch the Clearwater Threshers counter in a 5-4 defeat at Bright House Field.

Down 3-2 in the eighth inning the Marauders plated two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Bengie Gonzalez reached on a wild pitch following a one-out strikeout. Robbie Grossman then singled to left and lifted the reliever Juan Sosa. Jordan Whatcott entered and promptly allowed a double to deep centerfield by Adalberto Santos. It was Santos' second late-inning go-ahead hit in four days.

The lead didn't last, however, with Clearwater scoring two in the bottom of the eighth. Sebastian Valle led off with single, misplayed at third by Kelson Brown. Brandon Tripp then grounded into what appeared to be a potential double play. Santos fielded the ball cleanly at second, but dropped the ball trying to tag Valle and everybody was safe. Both runners were sacrificed over by Travis Mattair. They scored on a single by Cesar Hernandez, who was thrown out trying to take second. The runs made it 5-4, a Clearwater final.

Bradenton had gotten on the board first with a double by Grossman in the first. Santos singled him home for a 1-0 lead. The Threshers scored twice in the fourth, including a Valle homerun, for a 2-1 lead. Darin Ruf homered as well one inning later.

Bradenton's other run came in the fifth when Kelson Brown drove in Evan Chambers. It was Brown's fourth RBI in three games.

Santos finished the game with three hits. Grossman's two runs give him 93 on the season. The record for most runs in a season by a Pirates Class A-Advanced player is 98, set by Pat Magness for the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2005. Records are since 1980, when Baseball Reference began distinguishing Class A and Class A-Advanced.

The loss goes to Welker, his fifth. The win is Whatcott's second.
