LAKELAND, Fla. - Left-hander Drew Smyly struck out 10 and allowed just two hits through seven innings to lead the Lakeland Flying Tigers (13-16, 49-50) to a 1-0 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals (16-16, 45-56) Monday night in game one of a four-game series at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Eric Fornataro (6-9, 3.79) scattered seven hits but gave up only one run in 6.2 innings to suffer the tough-luck loss, his third in a row. The right-hander, in his fourth professional season after being selected in the 6th round back in 2008, struck out three, walked two and also hit a batter and was removed with two on in the seventh.

Both Fornataro and Smyly (7-3, 2.58 ERA) held their opponents at bay through the first five innings, with just four hits and 10 baserunners combined while both pitchers hit a batter.

Lakeland finally managed to break the scoreless tie in the sixth when Brent Wyatt singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and eventually came home on a Wade Gaynor RBI-single to center. Fornataro forced a double play to retire the side, however, leaving the score at 1-0 headed to the seventh.

Rainel Rosario picked up the Cardinals second hit in the top half of the inning, but was stranded at first following three consecutive strikeouts, before Fornataro gave up a pair of two-out singles and was removed in favor of left-hander Justin Wright. Wright, making his third appearance for Palm Beach following a promotion from Class-A Quad Cities and a nearly month-long stint on the disabled list, finished out the contest with 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit.

Adam Melker recorded two of the team's five hits and extended his on-base streak to 10 games while Greg Garcia had a single to push his hitting streak to eight. Matt Little fired a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his fourth save for Lakeland.

Young right-hander Carlos Martinez (1-1, 5.40 ERA) will look to rebound from a very rough outing last week, in which he allowed four earned runs in just 1.2 innings of work, with his third road start for Palm Beach against lefty Shawn Teufel (2-2, 3.29 ERA) for the Flying Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Joker Marchant Stadium.
