Chase Austin & Bryan Evans Honored with FSL Weekly Awards

JUPITER, Fla. - Fresh off their first four-game sweep in more than two years, the Jupiter Hammerheads took both of the Florida State League's weekly awards, with third baseman Chase Austin named the league's Player of the Week and starting pitcher Bryan Evans the league's Pitcher of the Week.

After going hitless on July 18th, the first day of the award period, Austin has rattled off a six-game hit streak, with all eight of his hits going for extra bases. Five of those were home runs, starting with a pair of three-run shots on July 19th, giving him a career-high 6 RBIs. That game started a stretch in which Austin homered in four straight games, the first Hammerhead to do so since statistics were centralized in 2005.

Over his last nine games, the Charlotte, North Carolina native is 12-for-34 (.353) with six home runs, four doubles, 16 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Austin was a 5th round pick by the Florida Marlins in 2009 out of Elon University.

Evans was honored for a week in which he started off a pair of shutouts for Jupiter. On both July 19th and 24th, the right-hander tossed six scoreless innings. In both games, reliever Jose Rosario preserved the shutout with a three-inning save. In the first start, Evans held the Tampa Yankees to just three hits, while he gave up four to the Lakeland Flying Tigers in the second start. In each start, he struck out five batters while issuing one walk.

The Mission Viejo, California native has now kept opponents off the board for 16 straight innings. Evans began the year in the Hammerhead bullpen, joining the rotation at the start of the month after the promotion of All-Star Jose Alvarez to Double-A Jacksonville.

Evans has tossed 46 innings this year, split equally as a starter and a reliever, and allowed two earned runs in each role as well, giving him a 0.78 ERA on the season. As a member of the rotation, the right-hander has struck out 18 batters while issuing just three walks. He was a 14th round pick by the Marlins in 2008 out of the University of California-Davis.

Thanks to performances like those of Austin and Evans, the Hammerheads are the league's hottest team, winners of nine of their last eleven games. The team has won seven straight at Roger Dean Stadium, including a sweep of Lakeland, the Hammerheads' first four-game sweep since May 2009. Jupiter now welcomes the Dunedin Blue Jays to town for four games.
