Manitoba defeats Toronto 3-0

TORONTO, ON. -- On the heels of Cory Schneider's 2-0 shutout in Hamilton Friday night, Drew MacIntyre played a perfect game Saturday in Toronto, backstopping his club to a 3-0 win over the Marlies. The shutout extended Manitoba's shutout streak to 127:23 and their winning streak to three games.

Just over three minutes into the game, Manitoba's powerplay took on the league's best penalty killers as Toronto was dealt two consecutive penalties. But the Moose were unable to beat the Marlies goaltender Justin Pogge on the man-advantage and suffered their own penalty in the latter half of the period.

Like Greg Classen's two-minute stint in the penalty box, the first period came and went without a goal. Though they were unable to score on Pogge, the Moose carried a 5-2 shot lead into the second period.

Early in the second, a rush into the Marlies zone drew a hooking penalty from defender Reid Cashman and the Moose headed on their third powerplay. Although the Moose increased their shot-count to nine, Pogge and his penalty killers stayed perfect and Manitoba went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.

Shortly after the return of five-on-five play, David Ling descended on MacIntyre and rang a shot off the post. Toronto's top scorer was convinced it hit the net and celebrated accordingly, but the goal judge and referee insisted otherwise and the game remained scoreless.

At 10:49, Moose forward Pierre-Cedric Labrie earned an interference penalty, but for the fifth time in the game, five-on-four failed to result in a goal. Toronto assumed a 14-11 shot lead by firing 12 shots on MacIntyre through the middle frame, but great saves and missed shots at both ends of the ice contributed to another scoreless period.

Five minutes into the third period, Marlies D-man Patrick Wellar offered the Moose a fourth powerplay by taking two minutes for tripping. Though Manitoba reclaimed their shot lead on the man-advantage, penalty killers continued to dominate the play and kept the visitors off the scoreboard.

But not for long. With both clubs at even strength and the Moose set up in the Marlies zone, Jason Jaffray caught a piece of Nolan Baumgartner's slapshot from the point and tipped the puck past Pogge to score the first goal of the game and extend his point streak to seven games.

With just under five minutes left in the game, confusion at the Moose bench triggered a bench minor for too many men and the Marlies pressed for a powerplay equalizer. But confusion in the Toronto zone would result in a shorthanded goal for Manitoba. Pogge left his crease to play the puck, but the goalie and a defender miscommunicated and left the puck wide open for Manitoba's Jannik Hansen. Hansen snapped up the disc and fired it into the open net to score his first shorthanded goal of the season and put the Moose up 2-0.

The Marlies opted for six skaters in the final minute, and Jaffray capitalized on the empty net to score his second of the game.
