Corpus Christi Sharks News Release
The Sharks post season bid came up short Saturday night in Manchester (9-7)in a game that reflected the Sharks season as mental mistakes and turnovers ended Corpus Christi's (7-9) playoff hopes.
The Sharks took an early 14 -7 lead after Ivory McCann returned a missed field goal attempt 54 yards for a touchdown. It was the 4th time this season McCann has returned a missed field goal for a score.
The first half continued to see-saw and the Sharks went into the locker room at halftime down 2 points 26-24.
The third quarter, which has been a troublesome one for the Sharks most of the season, once again was a sluggish one for the Sharks. The quarter opened with a successful onside kick by the Wolves. Two plays later the Wolves jumped out to a 32-24 lead when Pinkney hit Emory Sammons for a 24 yard scoring strike. On the Sharks next possession, Larry McSwain stripped the ball from Sharks QB Fran Johnson, as the Sharks were poised to score, and returned it 43 yards for a score putting the Sharks in a 39-24 hole.
The Sharks continued to fight though and closed to within one. With a chance to take the lead the Sharks drove the ball deep into Wolves territory. FB Booker Jenkins then fumbled at the one and Manchester recovered and looked as if they could run out the clock. Wise use of time outs, penalties, and excellent defense however forced the Wolves into a 4th and goal from the Sharks 21. Wolves QB James Pinkney threw up a prayer that McCann intercepted at the 5. McCann returned the ball out to the 20 but fumbled giving the ball back to Manchester with 11.1 seconds left. The Wolves then were able to run out the clock and secure the victory.
