Brevard County Manatees News Release
(Viera, FL) The Brevard County Manatees did not need a clutch hit to win on Friday night. A walk was enough to get the job done, as Zelous Wheeler drew a free pass with the bases loaded in the ninth, bringing home Carlos Corporan with the winning run.
It was Palm Beach that jumped out to the early lead on Friday, taking a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on Paul Vazquez's two-run single. The Manatees bounced back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a wacky play. With two runners on, Corporan tapped an infield single to third baseman Jermaine Curtis. Curtis threw the ball too late and too wide to first base, allowing Chris Errecart to score. First baseman Curt Smith then attempted to tag Corporan out as he retreated to first base, but lost control of the ball while applying the tag, allowing Sergio Miranda to score.
The Manatees tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning, as Eric Farris started things off by lining a single off of pitcher Thomas Eager. Eager remained in the game, but immediately gave up the game-tying single to Logan Schafer.
Omar Aguilar (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to keep the game tied up. In the bottom of the ninth, Corporan led off with a single to right field. After a Brent Brewer strikeout, Lee Haydel was hit by a pitch. Eric Farris hit a potential double play ground ball to second base, but Haydel's slide broke up the play and limited the Cardinals defense to just one out on the play. After an intentional walk to Schafer loaded the bases, Wheeler walked on four straight pitches to win the game. Blake King (5-1) was the losing pitcher for Palm Beach.
The teams meet again Saturday night, with Jeremy Jeffress (2-1, 2.18) on the mound for Brevard County, taking on Palm Beach's Richard Castillo (1-7, 4.00). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
