St. Lucie Mets News Release

VIERA, Fla. (May 27, 2014) - A ninth inning rally by the St. Lucie Mets fell short and the Brevard County Manatees hung on to defeat the Mets 2-1 on Tuesday at Space Coast Stadium.

Jorge Lopez completely shut down the Mets over eight innings, limiting the Mets to just two hits and two walks.

But in the ninth Dilson Herrera led off with a single, advanced to second on passed ball and Gilbert Gomez singled to put runners at the corners. Kevin Shackelford entered the game and got an RBI ground out by T.J. Rivera and struck out Jairo Perez and Cam Maron to end the game.

The Manatees could only muster five hits, but one was a leadoff home run from Jose Sermo off of Michael Fulmer to lead off the third inning.

The Manatees loaded the bases with no outs in third and scored another run on a fielders choice by Alfredo Rodriguez to make it 2-0. Fulmer settled down to get a strike out and a double play ball to stop the bleeding.

Fulmer wasn't sharp in five inning, walking four and plunking two batters. However, he struck out five and gave up just the two runs in the third.

Hunter Carnevale pitched two scoreless innings and Paul Sewald tossed a perfect eighth to keep the Mets within striking distance.

Despite Lopez's dominance, the biggest storyline coming out of the game involved top Mets prospect Brandon Nimmo. The center fielder hustled to cut off a double by Nathan Orf in right-center in the third and came up hobbling. He managed to get the throw into the infield and continued to jump on one leg to the warning track.

Nimmo stretched out his leg near the track and did some light jogging and sprints to test himself. He was removed from the game but managed to walk off the field under his own power.

Gilbert Gomez replaced him in center and had two of the Mets four hits.

The Mets (30-21) will battle the Manatees (26-24) again at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Join the Voice of the Mets Adam MacDonald for the broadcast on www.stluciemets.com.
