Colorado Mammoth News Release

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth defeated the New York Titans 12-8 Saturday night at Pepsi Center, improving their record to 2-2. The loss drops New York to 3-2 on the season.

As the month of January draws to a close, the Colorado Mammoth hopes that their season took a pivotal and positive turn with the win on this last day of the month. Looking like a much improved team on both ends of the floor, the Mammoth seemed to right the ship and get their season back on track - at least for one night.

The Mammoth grabbed an early lead behind two Dan Carey goals - one in the first quarter (the only score of the period) and another in the opening minutes of the second period. Matt Danowski scored at the 8:31 mark of the second quarter to push the Mammoth lead to 3-0 and the Pepsi Center crowd of 15,023 sensed that they were witnessing a different team on this night.

New York was held scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the game behind splendid Mammoth defense and goaltending. Andrew Leyshon, getting his first start in net for Colorado, was outstanding, stopping 31 of 39 New York shots on the night. "The guys really played well in front of me tonight," Leyshon said after the win. "We really wanted to come out here tonight and get one for these fans," continued Leyshon. "They support us so well that we couldn't let them down again."

New York battled back in the third quarter, scoring three goals to cut the Mammoth lead to 7-6, but Colorado dominated the Titans in the fourth - outscoring the visitors 5-2 - to preserve the win.

Rookie forward Matt Danowski scored a career-high three goals to lead the Mammoth, while Gavin Prout (2g, 2a), Brian Langtry (2g, 2a) and Dan Carey (2g, 3a) each played key roles in their team's victory. Jamie Schewchuk added a goal and four assists for the victors while Tom Ethington and Nenad Gajic each added a goal.

Sharpshooter Casey Powell led New York with three goals and two assists, while Pat Maddalena added a pair of goals and assists. Jordan Hall tacked on a goal and three assists. Matt Vinc made 38 saves in the loss.

The Mammoth travels to St. Paul next Saturday, February 7 to take on the Minnesota Swarm. The next home game for Colorado is Saturday, February 14 when the Calgary Roughnecks visit Pepsi Center in a 7pm contest. Tickets for all Mammoth home games are on sale now at the Pepsi Center box office, all Ticketmaster retail centers, online at Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 303.830.TIXS or 719.520.9090.
