PORTLAND, Ore. - Nenad Gajic scored three goals in the second half, including the game-winner, and the visiting Colorado Mammoth pulled out a 10-8 victory over the Portland LumberJax on Thursday night at the Rose Garden.
Gajic's deciding goal was followed by an insurance tally by Mammoth forward Matt Taylor with 5:34 remaining. Goaltender Gee Nash shut down the Jax the rest of the way as the Mammoth improved its National Lacrosse League-best record to 7-1. Portland lost its fifth straight game to fall to 2-5.
Nash finished with 40 saves on 48 shots to improve his unblemished record to 6-0. Portland goaltender Dallas Eliuk was knocked out of the game in the first quarter after allowing two goals and replaced by Dwight Maetche, who took the loss with 36 saves on 44 shots.
"It was tough to get quality scoring chances tonight and I thought our guys played a sound game," Mammoth coach Gary Gait said. "We stepped up late in the game like we've been doing all season."
Mammoth captain Gavin Prout had a game-high six assists and Brian Langtry added two goals and three assists. Newly acquired forward Kelly Hall led the LumberJax with three goals.
The teams traded two-goal spurts in the third quarter, with the Mammoth taking a 6-4 lead on a goal by Josh Sims and a shorthanded tally by Gajic. The LumberJax evened the score with goals by Adam Bysouth and Hall, but Gajic pushed the Mammoth's advantage to 7-6 before the quarter expired.
Langtry gave the Mammoth a 4-2 lead in the second quarter before the LumberJax tied it up at 4-4 going into halftime with goals from Hall and Ryan Powell.
Jim Moss got his Mammoth career off to a great start by scoring just 47 seconds into the game. Moss, making his Mammoth debut after being acquired in a trade with San Jose, scored the game's first goal with a quick shot that beat Eliuk through the legs.
Jamie Shewchuk scored just 45 seconds later after taking a pretty pass from Prout to give the Mammoth an early 2-0 advantage.
