Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth earned its first win this season with a 15-14 victory over the Minnesota Swarm Friday night in St. Paul, MN. The overtime conquest at Xcel Energy Center brings the early season record to 1-2 for both squads. Mammoth president and general manager Steve Govett made his debut as interim head coach count with a nail-biter win.
The Mammoth answered an early Minnesota goal with a two-goal run by Cory Conway and Ilija Gajic.
Minnesota then matched with its own two-goal run. Jamie Shewchuk scored a goal with just 1:44 left in the first quarter, only to have the Swarm's Scott Self score just 12 seconds later. The Mammoth finished the first quarter trailing 4-3.
Minnesota opened the second frame with another early goal just 50 seconds into the quarter by Jay Thorimbert. The Mammoth's Brian Langtry finished a shot 48 seconds later, but then the Mammoth slipped into a nearly eight-minute scoring slump - all while the Swarm went on a three-goal run. The Mammoth finished the quarter, however, scoring four goals in just 90 seconds. Kevin Ross of the Swarm scored the final goal of the half with 18 seconds left to take a one-goal lead into the locker room at 9-8.
The Mammoth came out firing in the second half, scoring two quick goals by Chad Culp and Brian
Langtry, but were unable to score again until Jamie Shewchuk netted his third of the night with only 1:48 left in the quarter. The Swarm was only able to muster two goals in the quarter, its second coming with two seconds left on a power-play goal by Sean Pollock. The Mammoth and Swarm finished the third quarter tied at 11-11.
Minnesota opened the fourth with a goal from Andrew Watt. The Mammoth answered with goals by Ilija Gajic and Cory Conway. Minnesota's Aaron Wilson and Callum Crawford followed with a goal each to take a one-goal lead at 14-13. The Swarm looked to run the clock out and cruise to victory, but the Mammoth's Brian Langtry scored a game-tying goal with 1:46 left in the fourth to send the game to overtime.
The two teams traded several possessions and quality shots-on-goal before Colorado defenseman Tom
Ethington scooped up a loose ball near midfield, edged out his defender and ripped the sudden-death game winner - his first goal of the season - past Minnesota goalie Kevin Croswell 3:42 into the extra frame. The clincher gave the visitors from Colorado, and coach Govett their first win of the season.
Top performers for the Mammoth include Brian Langtry with three goals and two assists, and former Swarm forward Chad Culp (1 goal, 6 assists). Jamie Shewchuk and Cory Conway chipped in with three goals and three assists each.
Colorado is at Philadelphia Saturday night before returning home to Pepsi Center for a game next Saturday, January 30th. Game time is 7pm as the Washington Stealth visits Pepsi Center on Heroes' Night.
