Mammoth Names 20-Man Roster
December 16, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth has named its 20-man roster for the 2014 season, highlighted by two-time MVP John Grant Jr., offensive star Adam Jones, defensive stalwart John Gallant, and first-round-draft-pick Dillon Ward. Entering the team's 12th season in Denver, the Mammoth is optimistic about its chances this year.
"The game will be much younger and faster this year throughout the NLL due to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement," said head coach Bob Hamley. "(President and general manager) Steve [Govett], my fellow coaches and I have assembled a roster that speaks to the trend. I feel great about this group!"
Grant is a nine-time All-Pro and Jones was the 2012 NLL Rookie of the Year. Right-handed forward Drew Westervelt, acquired in an off-season trade with Philadelphia, has scored 30 or more goals in four of the last five seasons.
"Drew is a force who will have a big impact on our offense this season," said Govett. "He's been everything we thought he would be - and more - in training camp."
Returners Jordan McBride and Sean Pollock combined to score 100 points in 2013.
Cam Holding, Mat MacLeod and Joey Cupido anchor the transition players. Cupido, who led the team in loose balls (101) a season ago while not committing a penalty, was a steal in the fifth round of the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. A late-round pick from this year's draft caught the coaches' attention in training camp.
"We selected Cameron Mann in the fourth round," said Hamley. "He has a very bright future ahead of him if he keeps working hard."
Jackson Decker, who the Mammoth traded for on draft-day, has been a spark as well. The former Roughneck saw limited action in Calgary, but is expected to play a more significant role in his second season in the NLL.
Gallant, named to the Mammoth's All-Decade Team in 2012, continues his run as the most-tenured player on the roster. The Ontario native is the lone remaining player from the franchise's days in the nation's Capital. His 176 games played are 44 more than any other, and 130 more than Grant, who is second on the Active Roster in games played with the franchise.
2011 first-round-pick Dan Coates joins 2012 first-rounder Colton Clark on the back-end. Chet Koneczny, Jamie Lincoln, John Orsen and Creighton Reid return as well. Newcomer Bob Snider is a dominant face-off man whose 262 wins at the "ÃËX' were second in the league a season ago.
Tye Belanger boasted a 10.77 goals-against-average in 2013, fourth-best in the NLL. He will share time with Ward, a rookie who was the third-overall pick back in September.
The Mammoth hosts the Edmonton Rush on Opening Night on Sat., Dec. 28 at 7pm on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center. Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now at the Pepsi Center Box Office, all TicketHorse outlets, online at TicketHorse.com or by phone at 303.53.HORSE.
