Mammoth Loses Valentine's Day Heartbreaker

Denver, Colo. - Colorado Mammoth goalie Erik Miller recorded nearly 60 saves, but the Mammoth lost its first game at Pepsi Center Friday night in a 13-14 overtime loss to the Calgary Roughnecks.

The Mammoth retains its lead atop the National Lacrosse League's Eastern Division.

An on-field fight broke out before the first face-off and set the tone for the evening as the Mammoth and Roughnecks battled throughout the game with neither team leading by more than two points.

The Northern Division-leading Roughnecks scored first at 14:38 on a shot by Kaleb Toth. Colorado answered with two consecutive goals within a minute from Gait - his first of four on the night. Gait led all scoring with 6 points (4g, 2a). Gait's points were a game-high point total.

Calgary next scored twice and the Mammoth was held scoreless for 12 minutes until an unassisted goal by Ted Dowling.

The first quarter ended on two goals within 10 seconds by Ben Prepchuk and Kevin Stewardson.

The Mammoth's only goal in the second quarter by Gait was 5-3 power play goal on a full-field clearing assist from goalie Erik Miller. Calgary scored four goals, three of which were on power plays. The Mammoth trailed the Roughnecks 6-7 at the end of the half.

Dowling scored a power play goal at 9:46 in the third quarter, followed by Gait's fourth goal of the game.

Brian Langtry scored a mid-air goal at 5:40 in the third quarter to tie the game at 9-9. Prepchuk next scored his second goal of the night, a short-handed goal to take the lead, only to be followed by a tying power-play goal by Lewis Ratcliff. Ratcliff and Jason Wulder tied for game points (4) for the Roughnecks.

Dowling opened Mammoth scoring at 12:18 on a short-handed goal, scoring again at 11:44.

With 38 seconds remaining in the game, the Mammoth tied the score 13-13 on a goal by Langtry, sending the game into overtime.

The Roughnecks scored the game-winner with 16 seconds left in the first five-minute overtime period on a goal by Tyson Leies.

The Mammoth leads the League in attendance - tonight's announced crowd was 15,175.
