Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth beat the Calgary Roughnecks 13-12 in National Lacrosse League action Saturday night at Pepsi Center. The win, Colorado's third straight, pushes their record to 4-2 on the year. The loss is Calgary's first of the season, as they fall to 5-1, but still hold a one game lead over the Mammoth in the West Division.
A wild and spirited contest from the start, the first half was a string of back-and-forth runs by each team. The Roughnecks opened the game by ripping off three goals in the first ten minutes. Following a Josh Sanderson goal a little over two minutes into the game, Dane Dobbie scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season and gave Calgary a 3-0 lead with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter. Colorado would answer over the last 4:14 of the first quarter with goals by Brian Langtry and Tyler Crompton to cut into the Roughneck lead 3-2 with just over a minute remaining in the quarter. Jed Prossner tied the score at 3-3 with his goal as the first period ended.
The second quarter was a sea-saw battle with Calgary's offense taking the lead on two occasions, only to see Colorado's offense respond each time. Kaleb Toth hit the net twice in the second quarter for the Roughnecks while Crompton scored an unassisted goal at the 8:47 mark - his second goal of the night - as the Mammoth kept it close. Jamie Schewchuk's power play goal for Colorado cut the âNecks lead to 7-6 with just under six minutes remaining in the half, but Dane Dobbie's third goal of the first half pushed Calgary back out in front 8-6 heading into the locker room for halftime.
The third quarter would see a pair of goals by each team. Scott Ranger's goal at the 6:49 mark put Calgary out in front 10-6 and the 17,712 in attendance at Pepsi Center were beginning to feel a bit restless. But just 90-seconds later, Matt Leveque's goal on a beautiful feed from Mike Ward cut the lead to 10-7. Brian Langtry's hat-trick goal just 15-seconds later injected a shot of adrenaline into the Denver crowd heading into the fourth quarter.
As they've done over the past three weeks, the Mammoth was money in the fourth quarter. Andrew Leyshon, huge in net all night long, stopped the powerful Calgary snipers time and time again. Giving his offense, and home crowd hope, the Mammoth battled back with two quick goals early in the fourth quarter, tying the game 11-11 at the 6:57 mark of the fourth with a Tom Ethington goal. Those in attendance could feel the momentum shifting. Gavin Prout's goal just 26 seconds later finally gave the Mammoth the lead for the first time at 12-11. A couple minutes later, Jed Prossner added an insurance goal as the Mammoth faithful celebrated their team's final goal of the night. Calgary would add a meaningless goal in the final minute, and the final would be 13-12.
Colorado was led offensively by Brian Langtry's seven point night (3 goals, 4 assists), while Jamie Schewchuk and rookie Tyler Crompton added two goals each. Gavin Prout contributed a goal and four assists, as Gary Rosyski stepped in with a goal and three assists.
The Roughnecks' balanced attack was led by Dane Dobbie's hat-trick and three assists. Four other players followed with two goals each. Calgary outshot the Mammoth 51-41 on the night.
