Mammoth Completes Season Sweep of Bandits
March 17, 2013 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - One week after a 10-player brawl between the Mammoth and Bandits broke out with 31 seconds remaining, Colorado's Rory Smith and Buffalo's Steve Priolo dropped the gloves again - this time, 9:22 into the action. Smith was ejected, deemed the instigator. Priolo served for five minutes, one of three major penalties against the Bandits on Saturday night on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center. The second and third were the most costly.
Colorado scored five goals on two Buffalo majors and the Mammoth defeated the Bandits, 16-13. Jordan McBride led all goal-scorers with four tallies in the victory, three coming on the man-up.
"It feels good," said the second-year forward. "We haven't won [at home] in a while. We've now won two in a row [overall]."
Seven days ago, the Mammoth doubled up the Bandits, 12-6. By the time the third major penalty had expired tonight, Colorado was doubling up Buffalo (10-5). But the Bandits fought back, scoring four straight to end the third.
Reigning NLL MVP John Grant Jr., who scored a game-high eight points (3g, 5a), put the team on his back in the final frame. He scored two straight to start the period, then assisted on Joel Dalgarno's acrobatic dive-shot on the crease at the 6:39 mark to extend the lead to five.
Again, Buffalo made it interesting. With 1:58 remaining in regulation, forward Mike Hominuck's extra-attacker goal brought the visitors to within one. Colorado secured the victory with back-to-back empty-netters at 14:02 and 14:07.
On Saturday night, the spotlight shined on 2010 NLL MVP Casey Powell. Acquired in a trade earlier in the week from the Rochester Knighthawks, the veteran was instrumental on the man-up, totaling a goal and five helpers overall.
"The energy in the building, it was awesome," said the six-time All-Pro. "I remember being depleted by this same energy for many, many battles but it's great to be here. I'm excited we got the win, and hopefully we can ride this momentum."
Colorado finished plus-19 in loose balls, scored six times on the power-play, and twice more short-handed. The 16-goal outburst was a new season high.
The Mammoth heads to the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary for the rubber match of the three-game series against the rival Roughnecks next Saturday, March 23 at 7pm MT.
