Mammoth Bolsters Roster with University of Denver Talent
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth announced today its top three selections in the 2009 NLL Entry Draft are products of the nearby University of Denver. With back-to-back picks at 4 and 5 in the first round of the draft, held in the Harbour Club at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, Colorado was in position to add top-notch talent to their roster.
In the fourth slot, the team selected forward Cliff Smith. The Surrey, BC native appeared in 13 games for DU in 2009, scoring 14 points (10g/4a) and recorded four multiple-point games. In 2008, Smith was named to the All-GWLL Second Team and was tied for second on the team in goals (25), recorded three hat tricks and had 10 multi-point games.
With the fifth overall pick, Colorado scooped up fellow forward Alex Gajic. The 22 year-old made six starts and played in 13 games for the Pioneers in 2009, scoring 22 points with 16 goals and six assists. During his time with the Burnaby Lakers Junior Lacrosse Club, Alex was the top scorer on the team and helped them win two national championships. A brother to current Mammoth transition player, Nenad Gajic, Alex (6'4", 225lbs.) is the youngest of three Gajic brothers now in the NLL.
With their second round pick (17th overall), the Mammoth continued the DU roster purge by snagging Langley, BC native, Brad Richardson. While at DU, Richardson totaled 45 points (28g/17a) while playing in 52 games.
With the team's five remaining picks in the draft, Colorado selected Shaun Dhaliwal (Burnaby, BC), Ryan McFadyen (Duke University), Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC), Neil Tyacke (New Westminster, BC) and Rocco Romero (Cornell University) - a native of Denver.
"We're very excited about how we did in the draft," said Mammoth general manager Steve Govett. "We've added some impressive talent along with some depth and size to an already stellar roster. Our fans will be excited when we get our team in action this season."
The Mammoth opens the regular season on the road against the Washington Stealth on January 9. The home-opener is one week later as Colorado hosts the Edmonton Rush at Pepsi Center on Saturday, January 16.
