Kansas City Current News Release

KANSAS CITY - Kansas City NWSL concluded the final game of the 2021 Challenge Cup presented by Secret Deodorant with a 2-1 loss against the OL Reign. Kansas City played for the first time on their home pitch, Legends Field, after opening their home schedule at Children's Mercy Park last week. The team ramped up the excitement immediately with an early goal from forward Mallory Weber, but it was not enough as OL Reign were able to score two goals of their own.

Kansas City came out with something to prove for the home fans with a goal in just the 6th minute. Midfielder Victoria Pickett slipped a great pass through the back line of OL Reign to Weber, who then made two moves on five Reign defenders and followed with an amazing right-footed shot to the upper right corner of the net.

Later on in the half, Jessica Fishlock of OL Reign was awarded a penalty kick in the 34th minute and equalized the game at 1-1. KC NWSL continued their strong attacking pursuit through the end of the first half with forward Amy Rodriguez having three great chances, but unable to find the back of the net.

Weber enjoyed the atmosphere from the crowd, stating, "It was limited capacity with COVID, but I thought they did a really good job of making it feel loud and kind of as that 12th man."

OL Reign seemed to control possession in the second half, holding a 60 percent advantage over Kansas City. This proved to be the difference as the Reign took the lead after Celia Jiménez Delgado found the back of the net on a header to clip it over KC goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart's head. Kansas City was unable to apply the same pressure that created most of their chances in the first half. OL Reign finished the Challenge Cup with a 2-1-1 record while Kansas City finished with a record of 0-3-1.

Kansas City will now turn its focus away from the Challenge Cup and on to their first NWSL regular season match on May 15th in Louisville, Kentucky versus Racing Louisville. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. CT and the game will be streamed live on Paramount+.
