Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - After splitting their two-game set at C.O. Brown Stadium to open the week, the Madison Mallards (10-11) will embark upon the final leg of their seven-game road swing Wednesday night against the Kalamazoo Growlers (6-16).
Tonight's contest, scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT from Homer Stryker field, will be the first of two games in as many days for the Mallards and their divisional opponent. Play-by-play coverage will be provided by 100.5 FM ESPN Madison.
Mallards field manager Donnie Scott has penciled in Westin Wuethrich (Madison College) as tonight's starting pitcher. Wuethrich, a 6-foot-2 right-hander from Greenwood, Wis., is 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA across two appearances (6.1 IP) for Madison this summer, a span of playing time in which he has fanned three batters and allowed five hits. His solid start to 2015 comes on a heels of a freshman campaign in which he went 6-2 with a 2.73 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 69.1 frames.
To counter, the Growlers will task left-handed pitcher Timothy Cerven (Kalamazoo Valley CC) with his second starting job of the summer. The 6-foot-3 native of Decatur, Mich., is 0-1 with an 11.30 ERA across 14.1 innings for Kalamazoo's staff thus far, striking out seven and issuing nine walks. Cerven's sophomore collegiate campaign this spring yielded an 8-2 record, 1.55 ERA, 8.2 K/9 ratio and seven complete games in 10 starts.
Matchup History - The Mallards enter tonight's series opener with a 2-0 record against Kalamazoo this season after out-scoring the Growlers 25-5 in two games at Warner Park late last month. Madison is 5-0 against Kalamazoo over its last five contests and have gone 8-2 versus the Growlers under Scott (since 2013).
The Mallards will return home on Friday, June 19 against the Kenosha Kingfish. Next Friday will be Valpak Great Outdoors Night at the Duck Pond, featuring a Pepsi Outdoorsman Maynard Bobblehead Giveaway presented by WKOW TV.
