Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â The Quad City Mallards used great special teams play â scoring three power play goals and killing off 11-of-11 Kalamazoo power plays â in a 6-2 win over the Wings, Wednesday night at The MARK of the Quad Cities. In their last six home games, the Mallards (25-14-3) are 5-0-1 and have scored an average of 6.17 goals per game. The win moved Quad City within two points of idle Fort Wayne for second place in the United Hockey League's Western Conference. Right wing Hugo Proulx scored the 200th goal of his Mallards career (in regular season play), becoming just the second player to reach that milestone. Glenn Stewart holds the franchise record with 218 goals.
Tim Turner gave the Wings (19-13-6) an early 1-0 lead with a rebound goal, but center Jeff Williams tied it with a jaw-dropping move around a Kalamazoo defender in the circle and a shot that beat G Chad Alban (28 saves). In the second period, defenseman Dylan Mills sent an entry pass around the end boards to the right side. Rookie forward Drew Otten fired a wide-angle shot from the boards into the net for a 2-1 lead.
Quad City's recent power play drought reached 2-for-35 (5.7%) before the Mallards broke it in a big way late in the second period. Mills scored on a two-man advantage for a 3-1 lead. Then just 1:16 later, Williams scored again on a power play to make it 4-1. Defenseman Tom Menicci assisted on both goals. Kalamazoo closed to within 4-2 by second intermission.
Proulx got his historic goal 1:16 into the third period. Menicci added another power play goal 1:29 later on a feed from right wing Jason Sessa to complete the scoring.
The Mallards will complete their four-game homestand with a Friday 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Rockford IceHogs.
