Barry Melrose to serve as IceHawks interim head coach

LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The United Hockey League (UHL) and the Adirondack IceHawks (UHL) announced Thursday that Barry Melrose will serve as the IceHawks interim head coach for UHL Game #536, Richmond @ Adirondack (Friday, January 30, 2004).
Melrose will assume the interim head coaching position in relief of Bryan Wells. Wells was released of his duties on Thursday morning.
"I am really looking forward to returning behind the bench on Friday. I have coached all my life and love coaching. I will work very hard to get two points for a team that badly needs it. After Friday's game, I will resume my role as IceHawks owner and ESPN employee," stated Barry Melrose.
Melrose is a member of the IceHawks new ownership group, Glens Falls Professional Hockey, L.L.C. (GFPH, L.L.C.). GFPH, L.L.C. also includes Richmond RiverDogs (UHL) owners Glenn Morelli and Dr. Eric Margenau and ESPN's Steve Levy.
Melrose, a Glens Falls, New York resident, is currently in his ninth season as a hockey analyst with ESPN. He joined ESPN after serving as the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL). In his first season with the Kings, Melrose guided the team to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals. He began his coaching career following an 11-year professional playing career that included eight seasons in the NHL with Toronto, Winnipeg and Detroit as well as three seasons in the WHA with Cincinnati. Melrose played parts of four seasons and coached three seasons with the Adirondack Red Wings. He led the 1991-92 team to the 1992 AHL Calder Cup Championship.
The IceHawks will announce their permanent head coach at a press conference tentatively scheduled for Monday, February 2, 2004. Specific details will be released at a later date.
