Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (March 21, 2013) - The Quad City Mallards have signed defenseman Matt Carlson, the Mallards announced today. The team also announced that it has waived defenseman Tyler Amburgey.

Carlson, 25, joins the Mallards fresh from Bemidji State University after his college career ended last weekend with the Beavers' elimination from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association conference tournament at the hands of the University of Minnesota.

"Matt's a young defenseman who provides size and strength and comes to us from a very good college program," said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski. "He can bring us a lot of energy and additional presence on the blue line."

Carlson played 11 games for Bemidji this season and skated in 79 games over the course of his four-year collegiate career, during which he scored twice and collected four assists. The Grand Forks, North Dakota, native was also named to the All-WCHA Academic Team each of the last three seasons.

Before arriving in Bemidji, the 6' 3", 210-pound Carlson played two seasons of junior hockey for the North American Hockey League's Fairbanks Ice Dogs.

Amburgey, who signed with the Mallards last month, picked up two assist in 17 games with the club.
