Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â The Quad City Mallards have signed right wing Adam Nittel, who brings AHL experience and 34 major penalties in 110 career pro games. Team President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today. Nittel is expected to join the team for its weekend games at Flint on Friday, and at home vs. Fort Wayne and Kalamazoo on Saturday and Sunday.
A fifth round choice by the San Jose Sharks in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Nittel led Kentucky Thoroughblades (AHL) forwards with 15 major penalties and 203 penalty minutes in 40 games in 2000-01. The organization nominated him for the AON/AHL Man of the Year and Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, presented to an AHL player who has made outstanding commitments to his local community and charitable organizations.
Last season, with the AHL's Cleveland Barons, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Nittel was injured in an exhibition game and could not play until March. As a result, he was limited to just three games in 2001-02.
The 24-year-old native of Kitchener, Ontario, turned pro in 1999-2000 after four seasons in the major junior Ontario Hockey League. He ranked second in the OHL in penalty minutes in both 1997-98 (309) and 1998-99 (336), and led the Erie Otters in PIMs in 1996-97 and 1997-98. He also scored 42 points in his final OHL season, with 18 goals and 24 assists for the Mississauga Ice Dogs and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
