Key Contributors Vinksy and Schmitt Back in 2018
Madison, Wis. - The Madison Mallards have announced the signing of two players who were featured on the 2017 roster and will return to the Duck Pond in May. Utility-man David Vinsky (Northwood University) and right handed pitcher Ryan Schmitt (University of Illinois) will be back in Madison after strong performances last summer.
Vinsky, a sophomore from Farmington Hills, Michigan, is coming off of a stellar 2017 spring season. Vinsky led all of Division II baseball with 108 hits and 27 doubles while hitting .449 for the Northwood University Timberwolves.
In Madison, Vinsky, who saw time at first base and in the outfield, proved to be a versatile player in the field and consistently produced in the middle of the Mallards lineup. In 34 games Vinsky tallied 41 hits, nine doubles and two home runs. Overall, Vinsky posted a .320 average at the plate while finishing with a .409 on base percentage. With Vinksy returning to Madison, field manager Donnie Scott is armed with a strong bat in the middle of the order.
Schmitt, a sophomore who was formerly a standout at Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin, will return to the Mallards after a short stint with the club last summer. As a freshman with the Illini last spring, Schmitt made 22 appearances and racked up 23 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .232 batting average.
With the Mallards, Schmitt pitched in six total ballgames, four of which he started. He held a 2-1 record along with an impressive 1.82 ERA through 24.2 innings pitched. Schmitt's most dominant performance came on June 24th in Lakeshore when he worked seven scoreless innings while allowing only four hits in a 6-2 Mallards victory.
