Madison Mallards News Release
GREEN BAY, WI - July 7, 2011.The Madison Mallards defeated the Green Bay Bullfrogs 4-3 Thursday night at Joannes Stadium in the opening game of the second half of the 2011 Northwoods League season. The game featured solid pitching performances from both teams, but it would be offense that won the game in the end for the Mallards.
Trailing by one run in the seventh, the Mallards put a nice rally together, scoring two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Michael Handel (Minnesota) walked to lead off the inning for the Mallards, and Brent Kuper (Parkland College) followed with a fielder's choice and was safe at first with Handel reaching second safely. After Trey Watkins (LSU) successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third, Willie Argo (Illinois) drove in Handel on a sacrifice fly and Zack Powers (Florida) drove in Kuper on a two-out single to provide the winning margin.
Other notable performances for the Madison offense came from Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) and Andrew Barna (Davidson). Theunissen continued his great season by going 3-for-4 at the plate, and Barna tallied an RBI.
Green Bay was led by Ryan Allgrove (UC Davis) and Eric Peterson (Washington). Allgrove was 2-for- 3 with two walks and Peterson was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ty Filliben (Samford) drove in a run for the Bullfrogs as well.
Jonathan Crawford (Florida) started for the Mallards Thursday but unfortunately would not factor into the decision. Crawford went 5.1 innings and allowed all three Green Bay runs on seven hits. He walked two batters and struck out six.
The win went to reliever Travis Parker (St. Louis). Parker came in for Crawford in the sixth inning and got the Mallards out of further trouble. He pitched his way out of a two-on, two-out jam for a total of 0.2 innings of work. Tony Bryant (Oregon State) picked up his first save as a member of the Madison pitching staff.
Taking the loss for Green Bay was Tim Giel (Columbia). Giel started the game for the Bullfrogs and went 6.2 innings. He surrendered all four Mallards' runs and falls to 3-2 on the season.
The Mallards will stay in Green Bay and face the Bullfrogs Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The game will be the finale of the two-game set and the Mallards will look to not only sweep the short series, but take a 4-3 head-to-head advantage over the Bullfrogs as well.
