Quad City Mallards News Release

Flint, Mich. (December 20, 2009) - The Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, Sunday night fell to the host Flint Generals 6-5 in overtime as John Ronan scored the winning goal- his second- at 1:16 of sudden death. The Mallards did earn one point for the overtime loss.

Ronan jammed in the winner from the doorstep after the Generals, who battled back from a 5-1 deficit, scored twice late in the third period to force overtime. Jake Pence scored from the slot to cut the Mallard lead to 5-4 with 2:08 left in the third. With just 13.4 seconds left in regulation and the Generals up 6-on-4 after having gone on the power play and emptied their net for an extra attacker, Jamie Schaafsma scored the dramatic equalizer off a goalmouth scramble.

Flint had begun to battle back in the second period after surrendering five goals in the first. Ben Boudreau tipped the puck in narrow the margin to 5-2 one minute into the second; just past the midway point Ronan scored from the high slot to cut the gap to two goals.

The game had started in a much different fashion than it would finish as Quad City jumped on the Generals early- it took the Mallards just one minute and 44 seconds to grab the lead when Levesque scored from the doorstep and only a further 18 seconds to stretch the gap to 2-0 on Mike Zbriger's wraparound.

The Mallards' were on the power play when Justin White's tip in made it 3-0 at 8:57 of the first period and chased Flint starting goaltender Rob Nolan from the game.

41 seconds later Steve Silver's drive from the left wing circle would cut the Mallard lead to 3-1, but exactly one minute after that Juris Stals caught relief goaltender Nick Niedert out of position and jammed the puck in from the side of the goal.

Levesque would charge down the slot to score his second and the Mallards' fifth of the opening period at the 15:27 mark.

The Generals reinserted Nolan at the start of the second period and he would keep the Mallards of the scoreboard the rest of the way while his teammates produced the necessary offense at the other end.
