Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL-The Mallards and Ice Hogs engaged in a defensive duel on Sunday that ended tied at one after 60 minutes. The Hogs pulled out the shootout win after nine rounds to hand Quad City their first loss on home ice this season. The Mallards fall to 5-4-1 on the season.
In the first, the teams exchanged goals as Rockford's J.C. Ruid and Quad City's Jason Deskins each scored. Ruid's marker was mired in controversy as referee Chris Ciamaga conferred with the goal judge before determining that the puck entered the net. Ruid's marker at 9:50 of the first period was his ninth goal of the season.
Deskins answered Ruid's marker with a power-play goal at the 14:11 mark of the first. Deskins' goal was his fifth as a Mallard. Greg Barber recorded an assist on the goal.
Rookie netminder Robert Gherson stopped 27 of 28 Rockford shots to continue his hot play. A crowd of 3,342 marveled as Gherson made several key saves to keep the Mallards in the game. Rockford answered with Michel Robinson who also turned aside 27 shots.
After a scoreless second and third period, the game was settled by a shootout. J.F. Dufour scored in the shootout's second round to give Rockford a 1-0 lead. In the fifth round, the Mallards needed a goal to force additional rounds and Jason Deskins provided it. With the shootout tied at one, the game headed into a sudden death shootout. In the seventh round, each team scored as Vince Malts recorded a goal for Rockford and Marty Standish scored for the Mallards. The game was finally decided in the ninth round as Miguel Lafleche scored for the Hogs.
The Mallards are back on the ice on Friday at The MARK. Game time is scheduled to 7:00 p.m. as the Mallards take on the Port Huron Beacons.
