Mallards Blast Missouri 7-1; 5,068 Watch Flock Roll to Fourth
March 9, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. - Mike Hellyer and Mike Stinziani provided two goals and one assist apiece and Mickey Lang- who, like Stinziani, scored one of his two goals on a penalty shot- also scored twice as the host Quad City Mallards converted four power plays and scored seven unanswered goals on the way to a 7-1 rout of the Missouri Mavericks in front of 5,068 fans Saturday night. With the victory, the Mallards extended their winning streak to a season best four straight games, moved to a season high three games over .500 (27-24-6, 60 points) and opened up a six point lead over the idle Bloomington Blaze in the race for the eighth and final Central Hockey League playoff spot.
The Mallard onslaught started only after Ryan Jardine gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead with a blast from the left wing circle at 8:29 of the first period. The Mallards bounced back to tie the game at one when Hellyer pounced on a loose puck in the slot and rifled home a power play goal at 18:18 of the first period.
The Mallards were again on the power play when Lang swept the puck between Maverick goaltender Mike Clemente's pads from the right wing circle to give the Mallards' the lead at 11:15 of the second period. At 13:31, Stinziani raced in through the right wing circle and extended the gap to 3-1 with a backhander.
The Mallards were up two men when Darren McMillan's one timer from the left wing circle made it 4-1 and kick-started a four-goal third period at 1:40 of the final frame. The Mallards, incredibly, scored their next two goals on penalty shots. First Stinziani and then Lang were both illegally denied clear breakaway bids by Missouri's Blake Forsyth. Stinziani went to the forehand to bury his penalty shot at 6:53; Lang tucked his home on the backhand at 15:20. Hellyer capped off evening by scoring his second man advantage goal from the slot with just 26 seconds left in the game.
The Mallards' turned in their hugely impressive performance while drawing a throng of better than 5,000 fans for the third time in their last three Saturday night home games.
