Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors faced the London Knights this evening at the Hershey Centre and kicked off the final month of the regular season on a positive note. The Majors won tonight's game by a score of 5-0, and outshot the Knights 33-6.
The Majors put pressure on the Knights right away, starting with the opening face off. Devante Smith-Pelly and Justin Shugg connected for the first goal of the night. Shugg found Smith-Pelly in front of the London net to make it 1-0 Majors at 4:23. Maxim Kitsyn expanded the Mississauga lead seconds later. Kitsyn fought off a defender, skated out in front of the Majors net and put one past his World Junior teammate, Igor Bobkov, making it 2-0 Majors. With the period winding down, Smith-Pelly scored his second of the game to put the Majors up 3-0. After receiving the puck in front of the net, Smith-Pelly fired a wrist shot over Bobkov's shoulder to make it 3-0 Majors. Casey Cizikas and Dylan DeMelo got the assists this time. The Majors absolutely dominated London in the first period, outshooting the Knights 15-0.
The Majors continued to dominate in the second period on the shot clock and on the scoreboard. While outshooting London 10-4 in the second, Mississauga also added two more goals to their lead. The first came from former Knight, Michael D'Orazio at 17:08. D'Orazio's goal came while Andreas Athanasiou was serving a minor penalty for tripping. The goal made it 4-0 Majors, and was assisted by Kitsyn and Rob Flick. Kitsyn continued to have his former teammate's number as he added one more goal for the Majors before the period was over. Kitsyn's goal was his eighth of the season, second goal of the game and third point of the game. Mika Partanen had the assist. Although London did not have many shots, they did have one great scoring chance on their fourth shot of the game where JP Anderson had to slide across the crease and stick out his pad for the stellar save, to keep the shutout intact.
The Majors did not add to their lead in the third period. While they continued their strong defensive play, they had their lowest number of shots on goal in the third with eight. They continued to hold back London, allowing just two more shots on JP Anderson. Tensions did boil over about halfway through the period, as former Mississauga IceDog Dylan MacEachern fought Joe Cramarossa at 8:14.
Anderson stopped all six shots he faced for his fifth shutout of the season. Bobkov made 28 saves on 33 shots in a losing effort for the Knights. The games three stars were D'Orazio (3rd), Smith-Pelly (2nd) and Kitsyn (1st).
The Majors will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Oshawa to face the Generals. Game time is 7:00 PM. The game can be seen on Rogers TV or listen live at The Haze FM.ca. The Majors then return home to face the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday afternoon. Puck drop is 2:00 PM and tickets are available at the Hershey Centre box office.
