Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Peterborough, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors finished off the Peterborough Petes in four straight games, with a 3-0 victory tonight at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
The Petes came out trying to extend the series to a fifth game but the Majors defence and effective penalty killing ended any hope of that. The teams exchanged power play opportunities throughout the opening period but neither was able to capitalize on their advantages.
Mississauga opened the second period as the more aggressive side and continued to pressure the Petes goal. The persistance paid off and the Majors scored the game's first goal at 9:57 courtesy of Dustin Ekleman. Corey Bureau and Ekelman rushed into the Petes end, Bureau passed the puck to a streaking Ekelman. Ekelman then fired the puck past Jason Missiaen, high glove side for his third of the post season. St. Mike's continued to take it to Peterborough and at 16:47 increased the lead on the power play. The Petes failed to clear the puck out of their own end and Devante Smith-Pelly jumped on the loose puck. Smith-Pelly wired his wrist shot past Missiaen, again high glove side to make it 2-0 for the Majors. After two periods of play the Majors outshot the Petes 32-17 and carried a 2-0 lead into the final twenty minutes.
The Petes came out firing at the Majors in the third period but again could not get past the Majors defence or solid goaltending from Chris Carrozzi. As the period drew closer to the end the Petes pulled Missiaen with still two minutes in regulation, while on the power play. The Majors added a short handed empty netter from Ryan Lopes to seal the deal and finish the series. Lopes won the puck at his own blue line and flicked the puck trying to clear it, the puck trickled into the crease, Petes defenceman Jamie Wise attempted to clear it but fell and knocked himself and the puck into the net for the final goal. Chris Carrozzi made 27 saves to earn the shutout and the victory for Mississauga. Jason Missaien stopped 38 shots in a losing effort.
The Majors will now return home and await results from elsewhere in the Eastern Conference to determine who their second round opponent will be.
