Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors head into their home opener with a perfect 3-0 record start to the season.

Riley Brace continued his torrid start with three goals - one shorthanded - as the Majors downed the Niagara IceDogs 6-4 in Ontario Hockey League play Thursday night in St. Catharines, spoiling the IceDogs home opener.

Mississauga scored three goals in the first 15:24 of the opening period and never trailed, with Brace again leading the way. The veteran forward now has six goals to start the season and leads the OHL in goals scored.

"I want to lead by example and it's been pretty good so far," Brace told TV Cogeco after the game. "It's huge to get a good start like this on the road.

"We don't want to lose a game so we're going to battle hard every night."

The Majors battled hard all night on Thursday, leading 4-1 after the first period and 5-3 after 40 minutes en route to yet another win on the road after picking up wins last week in Sudbury and Peterborough.

Majors General Manager/Coach James Boyd was very pleased with his team's effort.

"I liked our work ethic tonight a lot," Boyd said. "I thought Jamie Wise in particular had a real workmanlike effort and created all kinds of chances, he was very good.

"I also liked our composure after we took the lead and Niagara scored two goals to get back in it. We didn't panic and really held the fort. Overall it was just a real solid effort on the road tonight.

"It's been a great start to the season."

Jamie Wise, Junior Harris and Jordan Mayer scored the other goals for the Majors, while JP Anderson made 28 saves for his third win as Niagara out-shot Mississauga 32-28.

Derek Schoenmakers added a pair of assists for the Majors, who beat Mark Visentin six times on 28 shots.

Joel Wigle scored twice for Niagara and Steven Shipley added the other goal for the IceDogs, who slipped to 0-2.

The Majors play their home opener Friday night at 7:35 p.m. at the Hershey Centre against the Owen Sound Attack in a rematch of last year's OHL Final. Tickets are available at the Hershey Centre box office or at www.ticketmaster.ca.
