Majors Hang On To Take Commading Lead

March 23, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors held off a late rally from the Peterborough Petes to win 5-3 tonight at the Hershey Centre. The Majors now increase their lead to 3-0, and have a chance to finish the series on Thursday night.

For the second straight night the Petes opened the scoring, but the Majors walked away victorious. At 6:16 into the first, Austin Watson won the draw in the Majors end and went to the front of the goal, sending the puck to Adam Sedlak. Sedlak fired the puck at goal and Watson just got his stick on it to deflect it past Chris Carrozzi to make it 1-0 for Peterborough. Just over two minutes later the Majors responded after a turnover by the Petes deep in their own end. Peterborough failed to clear and Rob Flick collected the loose puck and fired it past Jason Missiaen to make it 1-1. One second after the faceoff to resume play Joseph Cramarossa and David Quesnele dropped the gloves and sent the crowd into a frenzy. The teams exchanged chances as the period went on with Mississauga still holding the upper hand. At 17:19, Jordan Mayer put the Majors ahead on the power play to make it 2-1. The original shot on net came from Blake Parlett on the point, Riley Brace then failed to score and the puck came to Mayer who tapped it in to give St. Mike's the lead after one.

The Majors continued to outplay the Petes; and increased the lead to 3-1 just over a minute into the second period courtesy of Devante Smith-Pelly. Smith-Pelly won the puck along the sideboard and drove to the net and beat a sprawling Missiaen. The Majors kept the momentum rolling and made it 4-1 thanks to Casey Cizikas. Jordan Mayer screened Missiaen, he was able to make a save on Dustin Ekelman's shot but the rebound was put in by Cizikas making it 4-1 for Mississauga. Liam Heelis knocked down Stuart Percy and grabbed the loose puck and made a centering pass to Joey West who put it past Carrozzi to get Peterborough to within two of the Majors after two periods of play.

The Petes scored forty-five seconds into the third period on the power play after Chris Breen's one-timer beat Carrozzi to make it 4-3. The goal seemed to boost the Petes spirits as they were out chancing the Majors for majority of the third period and trying to avoid going down by three games. They pulled the goalie with just over a minute remaining in regulation but Devante Smith-Pelly ended any hope of a comeback. Smith-Pelly flipped the puck over the defending player and into the empty net making it 5-3 for the Majors and that's how it would end. Chris Carrozzi made 29 saves for the Majors and earned the victory. Jason Missiaen was busier stopping 33 of the 37 shots he faced in a losing effort.

The Majors will now head to Peterborough for game four of the series on Thursday night. If a fifth game is needed it would be on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in Mississauga. For more information or to purchase tickets contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
