Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Peterborough, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors were in Peterborough this evening for their second game of the weekend. The Majors earned their second win in as many nights, downing the Petes, 5-2.

Peterborough jumped out to an early lead in the first period. At 2:37, Geoff Bezruchko took a wrist shot that beat Majors goaltender Mickael Audette on the stick side. It was just the second goal of the season for Bezruchko. Derek Mathers and Steven Trojanovic had the assists. The Petes would hold that lead for most of the first period. While the Majors dominated on the shot clock, Petes goalie Bryce O?Hagen kept the home team in the game. The Majors finally capitalized on the scoring chances late in the period. It started at 18:16 when Casey Cizikas scored his 24th goal of the season to tie things up, 1-1. Stuart Percy and Chris DeSousa had the assists. Last night at the Hershey Centre, DeSousa assisted on the first Majors goal and scored the second himself, and he would repeat that feat tonight. At 18:55, less then a minute after the Cizikas goal, DeSousa scored his 13th of the season to give the Majors a 2-1 lead. Devante Smith-Pelly and Michael D?Orazio had the assists. The Majors were all over the Petes in the first, outshooting them 19-4.

The Majors continued to keep up the pressure in the second period. At 7:43, Trojanovic took a slashing penalty to give the Majors the man advantage. Mississauga did their best to expand their lead, including a golden opportunity for Maxim Kitsyn. Kitsyn received a pass right in front of the Peterborough net all by himself but Bryce O?Hagen was up to the test, continuing his spectacular play, and keeping it a one goal game with a big save. Moments later, Joey West tied the game with a goal at 10:35, unassisted. West went five hole for his eighth goal of the season. That goal would cause Coach Cameron to make a change in the Mississauga net. With two goals allowed on six shots, Cameron elected to pull Mickael Audette in favour of JP Anderson who would backstop the Majors for the rest of the evening. Neither team could muster any more offense in the second. The period ended in a 2-2 tie with Mississauga dominating the shots on goal again, 17-5 in the period and 36-9 in the game after two.

Mississauga would finally capitalize on their huge lead in shots in the third period. It started with a goal by Smith-Pelly at 6:14 to give the Majors a 3-2 lead. Smith-Pelly?s goal was his 28th of the season, and was assisted by Cizikas. A tripping penalty by Lino Martschini at 11:01 would send the Majors to the powerplay and allow them to expand their lead. At 12:33, Cizikas scored his 25th of the season on the powerplay to give the Majors some insurance. Smith-Pelly assisted on the Cizikas goal. DeSousa would add one more for the Majors at 17:54 when he fired a puck past O?Hagen to make it 5-2. The Majors continued to dominate in shots on goal, as they had all night, outshooting Peterborough, 15 to 6 in the third period.

Bryce O?Hagen was stellar in net for Peterborough as he made 46 saves on 51 shots in the loss. Mickael Audette and JP Anderson combined for 13 saves on 15 shots in the win for Mississauga. Anderson did not allow the goal after replacing Audette, making 9 saves. The games three stars were West (3rd), Cizikas (2nd) and O'Hagen (1st).

The Majors return to the Hershey Centre tomorrow to face the Sarnia Sting in the Sting?s only visit to Mississauga this season. Tickets are on sale at the Hershey Centre box office or at ticketmaster.ca.
