Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors were playing their third game in as many days this afternoon at the Hershey Centre. The home team showed no signs of fatigue from the busy schedule, dominating from start to finish, and finishing the weekend sweep, with a 7-1 win over the Sarnia Sting. As was the case last night in Peterborough, the Majors dominated the shots on goal, outshooting Sarnia 59-29. With the win, the Majors have officially clinched a playoff spot.
From the opening face off, it seemed as though the Majors were determined not to have a repeat of last night, when despite outshooting Peterborough, the team couldn't find the back of the net with any consistency until the third period. They started to score early this afternoon when Derek Schoenmakers connected at 1:01 to give the Majors a 1-0 lead. Assists went to Brett Flemming and Jamie Wise. Casey Cizikas expanded that lead at 7:52 when he took advantage of a powerplay opportunity. In tight with Sarnia goalie Troy Passingham, Cizikas scored to make it 2-0 Majors. At 15:54, Flick stepped back onto the ice after serving a minor penalty and received a pass that sent him in on a breakaway. With a couple of nice moves, Flick beat Passingham stick side to make it 3-0 Mississauga. The Majors would strike once more before the period ended. With the extra attacker on the ice due to a delayed penalty, Alex Cord scored with Cizikas and Schoenmakers getting the assists. The period ended with the Majors ahead 4-0 and outshoting Sarnia by a whopping margin, 36 to 5.
Sarnia elected to go with a new face in net in the second period, replacing Troy Passingham with Brandon Hope. The scoring did slow down in the second period. Mika Partanen gave the Majors a 5-0 lead at 2:54. Partanen was the recipient of a great pass by Maxim Kitsyn, which he tapped in for the goal. Jordan Mayer had the other assist. Sarnia answered back with their first and only goal of the night at 3:50. Former Major Kale Kerbashian pulled off a spin move in front of JP Anderson and netted the goal. Alex Gakchenyuk and Nail Yukupov had the assists. Sarnia outshot the Majors 13-12 in the second.
The Majors would add a couple of more goals in the third period to ensure the victory. At 1:23, Flick won a battle for the puck and walked out in front of the net where he scored glove side. It was then Mika Partanen with his second of the night that gave the Majors a 7-1 lead. Partanen scored with a wrist shot from the slot at 16:56. Anderson was tested a bit in the third period and made several big saves to keep Sarnia from mounting a comeback.
Passinghim made 32 saves on 36 shots in the first period and Hope made 20 saves in his two periods in net. Anderson was solid in the Majors net, making 28 saves for the victory. He was named third star for his efforts. The games other two stars were Schoenmakers (2nd) and Flick (1st).
The Majors hit the road for two games this week, facing the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday night before a re match with the Sting on Friday night in Sarnia. The team's next home game is Friday, February 11th when they host the Plymouth Whalers in the fourth annual Paint the Rink Pink night.
