Majors Can't Hold off Battalion
November 23, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Another round in the battle of Peel went to the Brampton Battalion on Wednesday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.
Brent Mackie and Barclay Goodrow both had a goal and an assist as the Battalion rallied from a 2-0 deficit to edge the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors 5-3 before 3,827 fans in Ontario Hockey League play on School Day at the Hershey Centre.
The 11 a.m. start time to accommodate the thousands of school kids in attendance didn't bother the Majors early as they charged to a 2-0 lead. But the Battalion took over from there, scoring three third period goals to keep their hold on the Central Division lead.
Brampton (14-7-1-2) now leads Mississauga (12-9-1-3) by three points atop the division, thanks largely to the Battalion's three wins in as many tries over the Majors so far this season.
"They frustrated us once again and we played into their hands," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "They seem to bring out the worst in us for some reason.
"We started well but after we took the lead we fell back into some bad habits and they took advantage. We got away from our game plan and they took it to us after the second goal for the most part.
"We're going to have to find a way to solve them as division games are tough ones to lose."
Brett Foy scored the lone goal of the opening period at 17:19 and when Riley Brace fired a shot past Matej Machovsky at 1:33 of the second period, the big crowd of students roared their approval.
But the Battalion stormed back after that, with Goodrow and Cameron Wind scoring before the second period ended leaving the game tied 2-2. The Battalion out-shot the Majors 16-2 in the second period and 35-14 overall.
Philip Lane scored the go-ahead goal at 2:04 of the third period and Brandon Robinson followed that with a power play goal just over three minutes later to make it 4-2 Brampton.
Jamie Wise got one goal back for the Majors at 11:02, but Mackie slipped a shot into the empty net after JP Anderson was pulled for the extra attacker with just eight seconds remaining.
The Majors are auctioning off their special Remembrance Day jerseys that they wore on Rogers Sportsnet until midnight tonight - check auction.chl.ca for details.
Mississauga travels to Kingston to take on the Frontenacs Friday at 7:30 p.m. Next home game at the Hershey Centre is Sunday, November 27 at 2 p.m. when the Majors take on the Guelph Storm.
Tickets for all home games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
