Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Barrie ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors got the chance to put the series behind them tonight as they traveled to the home of the Barrie Colts for a fifth match-up in the first round of the playoffs.
The pressure was on, and fans at the Barrie Molson Centre certainly found themselves on the edge of their seats. The Majors fought hard to finish off the Colts for good as they concluded the evening with a huge come-from-behind win, and produced a total of 88-71 shots on goal.
Majors rookie forward Devante Smith-Pelly produced the game-winning tally to give the visitors a 4-3 victory in triple overtime, while starting goalie JP Anderson was solid in net and displayed flashes of brilliance, with 68 saves on the night.
As a result, Mississauga has emerged victorious in the series over Barrie, 4-1, and will advance to Round 2.
The Colts opened up the scoring in the 1st period to grab a 3-0 lead. Stefan Della Rovere's sharp angle shot coming at 10:40, with help from Darren Archibald and Dalton Prout, made it 1-0. Then, Alex Hutchings and Michael Sgarbossa each connected at 11:41 and at 17:56 to round out the frame. Andrew Eastman, Sgarbossa, Josh Brittain and Matt Stanisz got the assists.
Mississauga battled back with three power-play goals in the 2nd period. Cameron Gaunce's tally coming at 6:06, off of passes from Jordan Mayer and Mike Pelech, got the Majors on the board. Kaspars Daugavins and Gaunce each scored at 7:37 and at 14:18 to knot the game. The assists went to Gaunce, Pelech, Tim Billingsley and Corey Bureau.
There was no scoring in the 3rd period as the contest went into sudden death overtime while the shots on goal were 15-7 in favour of the Majors.
It was an intense extra frame as the period turned out to be a duel between both goalies, with several good scoring chances coming from both ends. However, the affair remained at a 3-3 deadlock. Mississauga outshot Barrie by a total count of 59-44 by the end of the frame, as the contest headed into double overtime.
Then, after a very tense fifth period of play, it was still a tied game as the excitement heightened, heading into triple overtime. The Majors were on fire outshooting the Colts 17-13 in this stanza.
At last in the sixth frame, Smith-Pelly's marker coming with only 1:55 left (unassisted) put the game away for Mississauga.
Anderson's 68 saves were countered by Peter Di Salvo's 84 blocked shots for the Colts. Mississauga went 3 for 10 on the power-play while Barrie closed out 0 for 8. The stars of the game were Gaunce (1st), Di Salvo (2nd) and Anderson (3rd).
