Gwinnett Majic News Release

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Majic made their World Basketball Association debut a triumphant one Monday night. With 28 points and seven assists from former Winthrop University point guard Pierre Wooten and 22 points and 11 rebounds from recent Georgia Southwestern sensation Dontae Truitt, Cleveland's brand-new pro basketball team won 116-108 over the Tunica (Miss.) Gamblers.

The Gamblers got 41 points from guard Lorico Duncan, a former Kentucky Wesleyan All-American, and 18 and 16 from Jerome Stamper and Jamie Rosser, but they brought only eight players to Cleveland State Community College and the Majic wore them down with depth and size.

Taking care of the inside game, former LSU player Rogers Washington scored 17 points and recent Middle Tennessee State post Steve Thomas had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Cleveland. The 6-foot-8 Washington also hit a crucial 3-pointer in the fourth quarter for the Majic, who scored 65 second-half points after trailing by seven at halftime.

"We ran them down with our depth in the second half," Majic coach Rick Hughes said. "We went inside and scored, and we tried to push the ball in transition." Christopher Davis had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Tunica (1-2).

The Majic are back in the Cleveland State gym Saturday night at 7 and Sunday at 2 p.m. for games against the Kentucky Reach from Elizabethtown, Ky., and the Magic City Court Kings from Birmingham, Ala.
