Midfielder delivers hat trick in US Open victory

San Diego midfielder Majell Aterado earned his second weekly honor as Sockers Player of the Week in a vote of Sockers' coaching and front office personnel. Aterado scored a hat trick, including what turned out to be the game-winning goal late in the fourth quarter, as the Sockers edged the Las Vegas Knights 10-9 to advance to the Western finals of the US Open for Arena Soccer.

The Sockers came into last Friday night's game playing severely short-handed, fielding a side of just ten players against the motivated Knights from the PASL-Premier division. After a scoreless first quarter, Aterado's first goal of the game helped San Diego carry a 3-2 lead into halftime, blasting a shot from well beyond the yellow line into the roof of the net. Majell's second goal of the game extended the Sockers' lead to 7-4 late in the third quarter, and his finish on a 2 v. 1 breakaway with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter gave San Diego a 10-8 lead, holding on for a 10-9 victory.

While US Open games do not count toward PASL-Pro standings or statistics, Aterado has been a steady contributor to the Sockers in his first season since coming south from the California Cougars, tallying four goals and four assists (eight points) in eight games. Majell went above and beyond the course of duty on the weekend, also driving the team bus back and forth from San Diego to Las Vegas. Aterado's extra efforts edged out Dan Antoniuk (two goals, two assists), Nick Perera (three assists), Eric Wunderle (goal, two assists) and Anthony Medina (goal, two assists) for the Sockers' weekly honor.

The Sockers return home on January 29th to battle Revolucion Tijuana at the Del Mar Arena, a 6:15pm kickoff. The Sockers will be unveiling their plans for fans to vote for the team's next retired number at the game, and they will also honor the UCSD Tritons' women's soccer team, which advanced to the Division II NCAA Championship this season. Tickets are available at www.sdsockers.com or by calling (866) 799-GOAL.
