
Mahoning Valley Tops U.S. National Under-17 Team

BOARDMAN, Ohio - The U.S. National Under-17 Team was defeated, 5-2, by the Mahoning Valley Phantoms in both squad's final regular-season game of the 2007-08 campaign Friday night at the Boardman Ice Zone.
Mahoning Valley's Robert Harrison tallied the first goal of the evening at the 4:24 mark of the opening period. Team USA quickly responded, however, as Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, N.Y.) registered his 10th goal of the season at 10:57 of the frame. Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) and Grant Scott (Sewickley, Pa.) each doled out assisted on the goal.
The two teams combined to record five goals in the middle stanza, including four markers for the Phantoms, and one for the U.S. National Under-17 Team. Stefan Salituro gave the home team a 2-1 advantage at 1:19, while Grant Blakey added what proved to be the game-winning tally at the 6:55 mark. Eric Ringel then contributed a power-play marker for Mahoning Valley with three minutes left in the period.
Shore notched his second point of the contest with a shorthanded goal just 55 seconds later for Team USA. The Phantoms added its final score of the evening at the 18:18 mark when Scott Moser netted a power-play marker.
Team USA goaltender Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.) posted 30 saves, while Garrett Bartus stopped 24 shots for Mahoning Valley.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team (30-31-2) begins the North American Hockey League Robertson Cup Playoffs next weekend in a best-of-five series against the St. Louis Bandits. The first three meetings of the series will be played at the Hardee's Ice Plex. Game time is set for 7:15 p.m. CDT next Friday (April 4) and Saturday (April 5), and 5 p.m. EDT on Sunday (April 6).
